Saraswathi is also alleged to have issued a death threat to a ruling party member

The Namakkal town police on Friday arrested P. Saraswathi, a former AIADMK MLA who later switched loyalties to the DMK, for making derogatory comments against Electricity Minister P. Thangamani and allegedly issuing a death threat to a local ruling party member.

Ms. Saraswathi was elected on an AIADMK ticket from the erstwhile Kapilarmalai constituency in Namakkal district during the 1991 Assembly elections. She joined the DMK in 2016.

Police sources said Ms. Saraswathi posted derogatory messages about Mr. Thangamani on Facebook and WhatsApp a couple of days ago. When AIADMK branch secretary Raja Keerambur questioned Ms. Saraswathi about this over phone, she allegedly threatened to kill him.

On a complaint preferred by Mr. Raja, the Namakkal town police arrested Ms. Saraswathi from her residence in the town on Friday morning. She was booked under Sections 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 505 (statement causing public nuisance), 506 (1) (criminal intimidation), 153 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) and 294 (b) (uttering obscene words in public place) of the Indian Penal Code.

When she was produced before the Judicial Magistrate - II, Ms. Saraswathi claimed she was suffering from blood pressure and other diseases and was undergoing treatment for the same. The magistrate directed the police to take her to the Government Headquarters Hospital here, where the doctors, after examining her, referred her to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital.

The magistrate later remanded her in judicial custody till October 1. Police sources said Ms. Saraswathi would be lodged in the Salem Women’s Prison.

After undergoing screening by the prison doctors, she is expected to be taken to the Salem GH.
